Anger - When Anger Hurts Your Relationship
By Peter Harris

Anger is a common and normal emotion that we all experience at different times and for different reasons. When you recognize when anger hurts your relationship it must be handled appropriately or it can be destructive.

Anger can be considered a negative emotion most of the time meaning that it will lead to negative actions and feelings by the person that is experiencing it. Examples of this include flying off the handle (losing your temper), storming out on someone without problem resolution, physical violence, throwing things, etc. Constant anger can lead to feelings of despair, bitterness and jealousy. It seems obvious but when anger becomes a dominate emotion that you experience frequently in a relationship it will begin to have a negative effect on those involved. So when anger begins to hurt your relationship you need to recognize it's effects and deal with it quickly.

Anger can lead to positive outcomes as well depending on the situation. Someone may be angered in a relationship by something that has happened or that the other party did. That emotional anger that you feel may make you take a stronger stance and lead you to a positive reaction that will help you in the long run. Perhaps you're in a relationship with someone that lies repeatedly. You've put up with it for a time but the more it happens the angrier you get. Eventually the anger you feel causes you to take action and leave the relationship before it gets any uglier. This reaction will benefit you in the long run in that you have recognized a major problem and developed the strength to rectify it and move on with your life. In this case the anger didn't really hurt the relationship but it helped you stand up for yourself.

You can tell when anger is hurting your relationship when it becomes a dominate emotion that you feel when you are with your partner. Anger in a relationship clouds your judgment in that you will have a hard time seeing the other's point of view when having a discussion. Have you ever been so angry with someone that everything they say is wrong or sounds hurtful towards you? I have and it is difficult to listen to anyone else when anger takes over. If you are becoming short tempered or you are complaining about every little thing that involves your relationship or your partner then anger is hurting your relationship. You may be justified in your anger, but if you expect any chance of a healthy relationship then it needs to be dealt with.

  1. I like that you addressed this very important topic for relationships and marriage. Anger can be damaging when held in and not addressed or when acted-out inappropriately through raging.

Resentments build up and I think if people don't have good communications skills things that could be worked through fester and continue to grow.

    Nice post!
